About Us

The Governor’s Cup Road Race is coordinated by a team of experienced race managers, all of whom have extensive backgrounds as runners themselves.  The Governor’s Cup is operated by the Carolina Marathon Association which has been conducting major running events in Columbia since 1977.  The Carolina Marathon Association’s motto has always been, “Our events are managed by runners for runners.”  That is true of the Lexington Medical Center Governor’s Cup Road Race which we expect to meet the highest standards for competitive running events. Russ is a professor with the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina.  He is responsible for overall management of the Governor’s Cup.

Rick is CEO of Richland County First Steps to School Readiness.  He is responsible for media, sponsorship, start line environment, and course environment.

Kerry McIver

Kids' Event

Kerry is the Measurement Coordinator for the Children’s Physical Activity Research Group in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina.  She responsible for Kids' Run Event promotions and operations.

Mark Stout

Race Operations  

Mark is the Program Supervisor for Cardiac Rehabilitation at Lexington Medical Center – Irmo. He also has a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from USC.  He is responsible for race operations which includes our race courses, police, coning, aids stations, course monitors, and race timing.

Ray Renner

Event Coordinator

Ray is the event coordinator for the Governor’s Cup Road Race, group fitness instructor and MSR for LMC health Directions, and founder of Lexington’s Race Against Hunger.    He is responsible for social media, web update coordination, community promotions, event based promotions, running clubs and other groups promotions, expo, registration and packet pick up, and volunteer management.

Jeremy Becraft

Main Street Mile

Jeremy is the General Manager of the Mast General Store on Main St. in downtown Columbia.  Jeremy serves on the Board of the City Center Partnership and First Thursday on Main committees.  He is responsible for the operation of the Main Street Mile.

Kathryn Cavenaugh

Elite Athletes

Kathryn is the Assistant Solicitor with Richland County.   She is responsible for qualifying, securing, and hospitality of Invited Athletes.

David Nannce

David Nance
Finish Line Environment

David is a part of the Technology team at Columbia based Electric Guard Dog, and race director for two trail ultramarathons, Harbison 50k/25k and the FATS 50K. David is responsible for the environment of our finish area.

Joyce Welch

Matthew Walker
Liaison to Military Organizations

Matthew is an MPH graduate student and assistant at the University of South Carolina. Prior to this role, he was a data collector for the Transitions and Activity Changes in Kids (TRACK) Research Project for five years in the Children's Physical Activity Group (CPARG) within Exercise Science Department at USC. Also, he is a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard for the past eight years.   He is responsible for working with military organizations on promotions and recruitment of participants.
